Cluster analysis of what the world eats

0 comentarios
Diego Valle-Jones

Keeping with the theme of the post below, I used a clustering algorithmto group the different countries according to what they eat. I simply played around with the number of clusters until I got something I thought resembled reality, so don't interpret this as an in-depth analysis.

[worlddiet.png]

  • Group 1: Lot's of coffee and offal. They don't like fish and fruits, but eat their veggies. Similar to Group 2.
  • Group 2: Lot's of calories per day, all kinds of meat, alcohol, milk, butter, potatoes and sugar. Vegetable oils are used for cooking. No beans here.
  • Group 3: Fish and rice (which coincidentally is what I had for dinner yesterday). They use coconut oil and don't like milk or cheese.
  • Group 4: They like bovine meat, fruits and sugar. They also use palm oil, and don't like veggies.
  • Group 5: Not many calories per day, lots of starchy roots, beans and pulses.
  • Group 6: Lot's of carbs (wheat and cereals). They eat their veggies and use olive oil and soybean oil.
The code is here and the data (taken from a database put together by the blog Canibais e Reis) is here.

Creative Evolution Posters by Maentis: The Nonsense Society

Creative Evolution Posters by Maentis
I’m happy to introduce you to a possibly insane art/design entity known as Maentis. It’s not clear if Meantis is a company, person, people, or what. Whatever “they” are, they’re definitely creative. Their evolution series, entitled “99 Steps of Progress” is incredibly creative, funny, moving and thought-provoking. I suppose it doesn’t matter if we know who Maentis is. Their art speaks for itself. Take a look.

Could you tell me more about “maentis?” Is it you? Does it consist of several artists? Is it a company?

Yes, it is “us”. We are maybe one single schizophrenic person, 2, 10 or 100 artists. We don’t really know…

The name “maentis” comes from the old esperanto base “maenti” which means “awesome”… At least this is what someone told us. We never checked out.

What do you hope to do with your art? Do you want to influence people?

We just want to sell products and make profits. Actually, we’re just trying to have some fun cus our lives really suck (we are all accountants in real life). Nah seriously, like all self-centred artists, we just wanna express ourselves. Nothing else. Except selling products and making profits.

Do you have a dream?

Right now we really would like to have a kitty and a chameleon at the workshop. But dreams never come true, do they ?

Where are you located?

Currently, we are in Paris. We love our city and really get inspired by all the dogs poops around. But we are planning to move to Pyongyang soon as it is becoming a major novative art place. The place to be.
